Spooky! Maybe they heard you were going to defect to photo bucket! Lol.
What's your thoughts on 1/48 armour, as opposed to 1/35?

Re: Tamiya Panzer III Ausf L 1/48
I can't get enough of them, I've got quite a few in the stash yet to be built, but it probably won't stop me getting more. I think I'd like to get most of the armour kits in the Tamiya 1/48th range. I think it's because they are nice and compact and don't take up too much space, the biggest of them is smaller than a Panzer II in 1/35th.chief5437 wrote:What's your thoughts on 1/48 armour, as opposed to 1/35?
For detail, I love the Dragon 1/35 kits, but they can be so involving. Whereas with 1/48 I could do the build in an evening (tracks aside), and thoroughly enjoy the process. Whereas I'm inclined to only partly complete the larger models if they take too long to do.
I just like starting new kits so much, that I don't get around to finishing them properly, so 1/48 is part of my self imposed therapy - "I must complete, must complete". This Group Build should ensure that I get at least one done.

Re: Tamiya Panzer III Ausf L 1/48
I know what you mean, I'm rapidly running out of shelf space and have to have a reshuffle every time I finish a kit. I might have to get some 1/48 stuff, it'll fit in with 1/48 planes as well, so it's win win!

Sweet Pz III. Really like how the camo scheme came out. You have a nice hand with the airbrush.

Looks good, I take it doing a wash of some kind to add some depth and definition to the small details is next?

Just sat waiting for the wash and muddy up work..... Or is it a fresh off the shop floor seen no action yet build?
I'll grab my popcorn and sit a while.....

This is turning out to be quite the sweet little build. She's going to look great all covered in dirt and grime.
Shame. She awful pretty.

A stunning looking piece of work. It'll almost be a shame to weather it.

Re: Tamiya Panzer III Ausf L 1/48
Yep, it's a wash next for the details, followed by some subtle weathering. Enough to make it look like it's been outdoors for a short while; we'll assume it's summer on the Russian Steppes, so dusty rather than muddy I think.
I'm in uncharted territory here, so I can't tell yet how far the weathering will go until I try it out. I'll use a bit of airbrushing and pastels by hand. Most likely I'll try it out on a Panzerwerfer first that I've been using for testing.

Thanks to all

I am tempted to get a hold of one of these 1/48 kits, I hear good things about them!

Re: Tamiya Panzer III Ausf L 1/48
Definately worth a go. They're simple and quick to build and very enjoyable.Gav0909 wrote:I am tempted to get a hold of one of these 1/48 kits, I hear good things about them!
So after deliberating too long about how to weather this, I've dived in and applied powdered pastel to the lower hull, running gear and dusted onto horizontal surfaces - all following a light wash with raw umber oil and white spirit.

A few parts broke off in the process and had to be glued back on, but so far I'm happy with how it's turned out.

It turned out perfectly Dude!
I think you chose well.
I'm a big pastel user myself... love the stuff.

Re: Tamiya Panzer III Ausf L 1/48
Part X
Painted the tools and tow cables

The tracks were primed black and then given a light dusting with Tamiya XF64 Red Brown. Then the steel effect was added using a metallic pencil, in this case a Derwent Pewter

The tracks were fitted, and re-glued as they came apart a few times. Then I applied a coat of matt varnish.
I'm going to consider this completed now.

I'll take some better shots for the Final Reveals thread.
This has been an enjoyable build and I'm happy to have taken part and shared in this group exercise. It's also been a small challenge for me to see it through to completion - I did digress into part building six other kits in the meantime though. Now I have a first completed model and without the group build and the deadline, I'm not sure it would have gotten to this point. So, thanks for all for the support and comments.

Beautiful PanzerIII. Fabulous camouflage scheme on it. The weathering is quite subtle, yet very effective.
Bravo, on a job well done.

Fantastic stuff Spurecutter...... never been into tanks myself because they're so hard, but following your thread you make it seem a lot easier than it actually is.
