Micro X Wing Diorama

Post by Twokidsnosleep »

Sooooo #2 build for that bad influence, watch your wallet and wife, Lysus guy's Sci-Fi build sig
This time I have Poe's X -Wing fighter

Image

The diorama plan is the super cool over water scene
Image

It is 1/16Million scale and needs to be assembled with an electron microscope....it was $3 with $3 shipping from Japan
This is a kit designed to show you how old you are and that you need new glasses and contacts....something I am really going to do today on my first holiday day off
Sprues all from one bag, instructions are printed on the inside lip and you literally need a magnifying glass to read them, really.
Image

Bandai designs these well and they snap together readily..took 15 mins for a simple oob assembly with no paint
Image

Now, under the influence, so to speak, of that dark fizzy drink with spicy rum, I managed to knock this little bugger right to the floor shortly after the photo. I re-assembled everything, but one blasted blaster is MIA, lost to the hardwood floor monster.
I have torn the room apart and can't find it. So I will have to scratch one up.
Time to go get my eyes checked...really

Obligatory :pop:

Love the idea of a tiny dio, I haven't a lot of space to store dioramas so I'll be watching with interest.

And taking notes :th:

Cant' wait to see your water effects.

I am thinking about putting my Ranger in a diorama to simulate the water planet they landed on in "Interstellar."

The water is the least of my worries at the moment. Scratbuilding a 1/16millionth blaster is a bigger problem.
Of course I will have to make four so they don't look too weird :pistols: blast it

For water, I use the cheapest clear silicone from the home store. If you paint the base your desired colour, then use clear, paintable silicone on top, all you do is swoosh in your surface texture and highlight the spray etc

For Dagobah, I added oil based colours to get a swamp murky look
Image
You can add to and build it up in layers
Image

I did a Hobbit scene with some cleaner water, same silicone but no oils..oops I lied, there are oils in the slimy green rocks
Image
This is all base blue colour and then dry brush white for the surface spray
Coen did some great water effects with a couple of ships he made

Now that I show you all this simplicity, I am sure to muff up this dio

Replacement blaster test fitted on

It isn't much more work to just make four parts when you make one, so,I did and will replace them all
That way they can be more uniform

Been thinking about doing a diorama this time. I've got the bandai y wing on the way and keen to do a simple hanger diorama. Any tips or suggestions Scott?

Hmm. .....Some generic tips

Do some research, save some pics, look at other builds, Google like a madman, Pinterest all that stuff

Topic unique not too obscure and readily recognizable....ask me how that worked out for the Dagobah diorama

Find a good backdrop picture that you can print out and maybe paste to some cardboard. You can attatch it directly or just have it sitting vertical as a back drop. That gives the model some nice depth and ads tons when you photograph

Use of angles and positioning...just like you would in photography and subject placement slightly askew, rule of thirds that sort of stuff

Multiple points of interest, other figures or details that can add to your main character not detract. Trying to have the viewer look around the whole dio and see something new every time

Look outside store bought kits for your dio materials to add those details; you will be surprised what works when you have that mindset..Lego, doll house, scale train materials , food packaging, styrene and metal tubes and shapes

A good base, not too big , not too small. I use plywood mostly and really like the Das clay on top, but that might not fly in a space hanger dio. Jon did some great silicone moulding to make his trench run dio in the sig last year. I have seen some very cool things on Pinterest done with the bases for dioramas...wrapping maps around the base edges, calligraphy writing, medallions attached to the sides

Talking like I am some freaking pro
This X Wing dio is an easy choice as it is an iconic scene in the movie with some great potential for cool water effects....was even used in their promo adverts

Interested to hear what you are thinking; the y-wing is a bit more challenging as had secondary roles in the films really so will take some thought and research.
Hope that gives some direction :cheers2:

Ya there you go :th:
Maybe with the X wing as a photo in the background with the rest of the hanger backdrop, chuck in a few wandering figures in the foreground, a droid or two, some equipment lift thingies and maybe even some base lighting if you are keen
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/50feet-1-0mm-FIB ... 6016.l4276

I could see that cropped picture duplicated as a kind of shadow box diorama where it has a base and three walls and an open top.
You are solidly on the right track, mate

How about a Hoth hanger scene? You could have a fighter pen for the y-wing like the ones you see housing the x-wings on the set of the movie. Bit of creative licence I know but it could look cool (no pun intended)
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Absolutely rooster tails. WOO HOO
Blasters are just a mishmash of aluminum and brass tubing strategically cut and filed to shape, telescoping and then CA glued together. Check a page back, I have them laid out there before assembly.
If I wanted to get nuts I could have made them all brass and silver soldered, but....nah

Thanks Jase. Thrown together but lots of thought and research while the kit was coming from Japan.
I already had that base made, so it was a natural fit and then WHAMMO it all came flying together :wtf:

Gosh Matt, thanks
Using clear silicone for rough water is as easy as taking a pee. Now smooth water, now that is a different story
You can absolutely do this
