Nocturna "Malefic times" Lilith in 70mm or 1/24 scale

Post by MarkVerploeg »

Hi guys and girls
So it finally happened
I made the first step in to the world of figure painting
Allthough they are baby steps
I already made a small review of this figure in the review section
It is located in the everything else part as i didn't really knew where to put it
But to make a proper thread of this i will show the boxcontent here aswell

So this is what i am going to build and paint
Image
It is a figure by Nocturna
They released several figures from the Malefic times series
That is a series of 3 graphic novels but there are several art work books for it aswell

Image
These are the parts

Image
Image
The body of the figure
I like to amount of details you get
There are a lot of creases in the dress and some very fine detail in her hair

Image
Image
The wings

Image
The arms

Image
And the base
At this point i'm not sure if i will use it or make something to replace it

And after a little bit of dry fitting and fine tuning of the arms (i had to remove some resin to get a better fit) i glued the parts on
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Amd this is how she looks at the moment
The wings aren't glued on yet but the fit is good enough for them to stay where should be

Once i start painting i will take them off again so i will have better access to the rest of the figure
But that is all i have for now
I already noticed i need to buy or make something to hold the figure during painting so i won't touch the figure and leave greay fingerprints all over it
And i need some paints
I have the Vallejo paint set that is made for this series of figures but her dress is a dark purple
I don't have any purple paint in my collection
And i only have 1 red and 1 blue so i am a bit limited to what i can make when i start mixing
And it is a good excuse to visit the modelling shop

So this is all i have for now
Thanks for stopping by and hopefully i will be back soon with the first update

Thanks Scott
I really look forward to painting it

And i did some more research on the subject
According to some ancient writings Lilith was the first woman
Even before Eve
But she had a mind of her own and was a bit on the naughty side
So she was kicked out of heaven and replaced with Eve
After that she became a bit demon like and can be comparred to a devil according to some
The intresting part is that allthough the religions on this planet all have different books and none are the same
The share several things like the 10 comandments but that is about it
Lilith however appears in both the Christian writings and the Hebrew writings

But this figure is only slightly based on those writings
It is purely based on the Lilith that appears in the Malefic times novels
She is the bad girl in those too
And let's face it the bad guys always look better in games ,books and movies

I will go to the modelling shop this weekend
I prefer Vallejo paints and they are easy to get
Some how i never found a single shop in the Netherlands that sells
Games workshop paints and/or citadel paints (i think those are the same)
So i would have to get them from another country
Besides that i get to go to the modelling shop so i don't see any harm in that
Gives me a nice oppertunity to spend the tip money i get at work

Thanks Alex
I still need a couple of paints for it
I only found 1 purple color in my collection but that is a Aqueous bottle
I don't really like those paints for brushpainting
Theybcan be used for it but i rather use Vallejo paints for the brush work
The Aqueous paints i have are all bought for airbrush use
But i will go to the shop tomorrow and get some purples and some more grey tones as i need some of those for the wings
And some regular resupplies for the colors i use more often
But i will start with the skin tones tommorow and see how far i can take it
I already primed my figures last night so she will be ready for some paint when i get home fron the shop
Or maybe tonight after work ,depends on the time

Thanks Paul
I never heared of that shop
But then again i almost never go to that part of out country
I used to go to Breda but the shop there closed and i never visited the new shop in that location
I saw their prices and thought never mind
And there is a good shop in Eindhoven where i can find most of the stuff i use or need
He ia a bit limited when it comes to paints as he just has Vallejo and Tamiya but those are 2 of the brands i use
The Aqueous i get from ASA and Der Sockelshop
So i mostly got my paints covered
But some colors are not used in my regular stuff
Like purple wich is pretty rare on military stuff
Except for some WWI planes but i only have 1 of those

Hi guys
So time for the first little update
I spend a good part of today painting figures and i think i made some good progres so far

So here is the progres of today
Image
I started out with the eyes
I painted the white with ivory and then used prussian blue to paint the iris
And to finish them i drew a thin black line on the eyelids
I used vallejo paints for this
The skin color comes from the Malefic paints set from Vallejo and serves as a dark base

Image
I then added some shadows with purple shadow
They are a bit hard to see but in the elbow you can see it

Image
And the first highlight color was applied
She turns a lot paler right away
But that is my goal
I want to get it to look like the box art and that has a fairly pale skin
So the final highlights will be very bright
But i haven't painted those yet
Unfortunatly i also covered the eyes so i will need to repaint those
A bit of a shame as i spend a lot of time painting them the first time

And that is all i have for now
Next time i will have the skin tones finished and hopefully i will have some of the clothing and the wings painted
I removed those for now as they where blocking my movements to reach some parts of her sides and back
Once it is time to paint those i will put them back in place

Thanks for stopping by and having a look
Cheers
Mark

She will be repainted though
This time with the airbrush ,just to see if i can get smoother colortransitions
After a second inspection i not as happy as i was before

Seriously cool. I think I did a couple Malefic mini metal figs once. They were nothing near as awesome as this. This is a fantastic start.

Thank you very much Lysus
The figure is very good
My painting skills aren't as good
I really struggled to get the eyes right and after a little inspection i decided to repaint the skin with the airbrush
Much easier and in a fraction of the time
But then i messed the eyes up once more
So now that those are good enough gor me i will cover them with some masking fluid and respray the skin tones
Hopefully i can make aome progres soon so i can post a update

Eyes are a pain in the butt, even in a larger scale. But It will work eventually, even after 7 attempts...
Figure looks really really good, I will add her to my stash some day.
Keep it up Mark, Paint another figure first, then go back to Lilith.. :th:

Hi guys
So it is time for a short update on this figure
At the moment it is basepainted with the exception of the metal jewellery on her arms
I need some good brush painting metallics for that and i don't have those at the moment
So i will have to order some
But i can still work on this figure as it needs a lot of shading and tonal variation to bring out the detail

But here is the progres so far
Image
I finally got the left eye painted
I had some serious problems there and i couldn't figure out why
Untill today when i noticed the left eye is much rounder then the right eye
Once the eyes and mouth where painted i masked them with some masking fluid and i sprayed the highlight color on the face
The lips are painted with a dark purple ,sort of eggplant color
The same color was used as a base for the hair
But that will get some highlights to make it look a bit different

Image
The dress is also painted in this very dark purple while the wings where painted seperate from the figure
Those are black but the camera has a bit of trouble showing the difference between the 2

Image
Image
Image
Some views from other angles
There basicly aren't any other colors then the skin tones ,the black and the purple at the moment
Mainly because there are no details to paint in other colors
But that is what i like about this figure it is rather simple in that way
But because of all the details it still looks intresting

There still is 1 thing that i want to change though
The skin should be this pale but it just looks dead
So i will get some flesh colored oilpaints to add some life to it
She may be some kind of demon spawn but that doesn't mean i have to make her look like she is deceased

But my plan for tomorrow is to work on some other builds but the first steps are either painting or clear coating so both have drying times that i can't move around as the Dauntless needs painting and masking so i can't rush that and the Sherman/LCM builds needs a flat/matt varnish that also needs to dry before i van move on
So i will probably spend some time on my figures aswell and start with the first couple of highlights and shades

But this is all i have for now
Thanks for stopping by and having a look
Untill next time and haply modelling
Cheers

Thank you very much Scott
I haven't done any really difficult stuff yet
Well not for a somewhat seasoned figure painter
I still find the eyes and skin pretty hard to paint
Clothing and all of the other stuff are easier for me
But i have that with 1/35 scale figures aswell
Unless i paint a SS figure ,those camo schemes are hard to paint
But man made stuff is easier then natural objects when it comes to painting

Hi guys
I feel it is time for a little update
I have started to paint all the details like the various tones of colors in her hair and dress
And i painted the jewellery ,something i wasn't planning on doing yet as i wanted to order some other paints for that
But i just wanted to try if i could use the mr metal color paints for detailpainting on a figure and it works
But i had to be very carefull not to spill any paint

But here is the progres so far
Image
By mixing various tones of purple with the purple shadow color as a base i painted the hair
That didn't go as smooth as i hoped but i kind of like this color

Image
The same was done with her dress
I simply added either black or white to the basecolor and thinned that to a milk like thickness
Then i painted it in very thin coats
That was one of the things i wanted to learn
I still haven't refined ut but i atleast have an idea of how it works
Now i just have to keep practicing this technique

Image
I painted the jewellery with mr metal color chrome silver
That took some time as this is a very thin paint that is easy to spill in places that you don't want it to go
To add a bit more detail to it i will use a little bit of wash to bring out the detail

Image
Image
These are made in some daylight
For some odd reason the camera overcompensates it and turns the picture a bit blue
But i what i wanted to show was the highlighting of the wings
I used a black base and did the highlights with german grey and dark rubber colors
I mixed in a drop of black with both colors so they wouldn't look too light comparred to the black of the wings

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
And this is how she looks at the moment
I am happy with my work so far but i think i will aplly some patina paint to her skin
I do that with my military figures all the time and it gives a healthy glow to the skin
Because at the moment she still looks a bit to pale

And that is all i have for today
I think i am getting near the finish line but i still need to paint the base and do some final detailing
So next time i think i will have most of this project completed
I will need to buy a little stand for it but i have several figures in the stash so i need to buy some of those anyway

Thanks for stopping by and having a look
Untill next time
Cheers

Thank you very much Frans
I aimed for a very dark look
That is about the only thing i can tell is in the story without actually buying those books
But i am still debating if i will use the kit base or not
A nice background could make it intresting but then again it would become much bigger if i made something for it
And i think i could have picked a easier first figure but it still is fun and i learned a lot so far
And that is important too
And this style of figures really appeals to me so i have been looking at figures a lot lately and i will defently get some more in the near future

Mark, this is really fantastic work. I might be repeating myself, but it's hard not to. That jewelry and those wings are just stunning. By all means grab a third one, I can't get enough of watching you do these.

Thank you very much
A third would be a bit much
Allthough i would buy a larger version right away if they would make one
I hope to get the final touches for the skin done today and maybe a little bit of varnish in some places
Mostly for the wash but the hair can stay shiny and the skin could use a satin finish ....perhaps
But i'm not sure about that yet
I need to see the finished result of the patina paint first

Re: Nocturna "Malefic times" Lilith in 70mm or 1/24 scale

Post by MarkVerploeg »

Hi guys
The weirdest thing just happened
I actually finished a figure
I thought it would take me a couple of days to finish Lilith but i got home early today and started to work on the final things i needed to do

So here is the last bit of progres
Image
I started out with a lillte bit of wash for the jewellery
It is nothing more then Vallejo black mixed with Ultimate thinner
I then used more thinner to remove the unwanted wash

Image
Once that was done i added the patina paint to the skin
It is a candy apple brown color wich adds a little bit of life tonthe skin
It looks pretty glossy when it is wet but once it dries it turns satin to matte

Image
One last look without her wings

Image
Then i glued the wings on her back and as a little detail i painted her nails black
She is a demonic kind of creature so why not
It is hard to see though because of the dark dress
The nails wheren't molded on the fingers so i just painted the part that would be the nail

Image
To give some shine to her hair i just used some future floor wax

Image
And i called it finished
Allthough she can't compete with the works of the master figure painters i am still happy with the way my first figure turned out

I think i caught the figure bug now
And i am sure i will get more figures in the future
But maybe not all will be full figures ,i guess some busts could be fun aswell and as they are bigger it would mean i can get some more practice with detail painting and with the general way of painting figures

But for now i will have to order some wooden stands for this figure and several others i have left in the stash
Needless to say that was the last thing on my mind when i started this figure and i didn't know of a shop that sells them
But thanks to the Flying Dutchman i now know a shop where i can buy some stands and once i go to a modelling show there will be some shops that specialize in them so i can get some nicer ones

So next thing will be to post a reveal in the figure gallery and then i will spend some time working on the Cristal figure that is on the bench
Or i will work on the other builds that i have for the PTO gb
This just took over the bench for a while
Thanks for stopping by and having a look
Untill next time
Cheers
Mark

Hauntingly, scarily beautiful..... like she would rip your nuts off for fun and torture
Your purples and subdued colours make her thus
Nicely done
