Wappynutter's Second-hand Speedwagon in 1/25 scale...

Post by wappynutter »

God help me!....
Firstly a Wappynutter Disclaimer for the Noob-ness and bufoonery that is sure to be found amongst this build thread..
Turning junk into prize winning pieces i may be capable of...... building a 1/25 scale car kit i most certainly am not!
Never once have i had interest as such or followed ANY car builds other than the usual Jeep or truck from military service. That's not to say i don't admire a real nice finished kit, i just never find the scale and build process interesting. Sorry!...  :eh:
I have seen some excellent "Car" builds on YouTube, some fantastic hotrod's etc.. from the Tom Daniel's GB running on there.... again though, i haven't taken a blind bit of notice of the build processes, only the finished pieces.  :thumb1: :bash: :wall:

"So why are you here?" i hear you say?... Well i am here for The Bro-In-law... Not Son-In-law Mr Gingerspook.. lol... :nena:
... and for you guys on the forum.. my build will be the light comic relief. Time is tight.... Mojo has gone but i will give it my best shot..

This kit is actually quite special... It has passed through many hands, Man-handled by the PoP no less and kindly donated not once... NO... but TWICE!
Viewed by many members and been wanted by most here... It is of course, the Donated Monogram Dan Fink's Speedwagon from the MEGA Christmas prize draw won by our very own "KingDan" and re-donated to his poor old In-law.
So firstly... Thanks to 4 guys on ISM... Lee and Paul for the Mega draw, Wes for his kind donation into the draw, and lastly Dan for passing the kit to me on the promise i enter the build and get a thread up.

Any questions about the kit should be directed at previous owners as i aint got a clue!.. lol..:
... and when i say second hand and previous owners, look i found the V5 log book/registration documents...

Image

See 4 former keepers....

Image

Box art here....

Image

Image

Image

So i carefully opened the box and took some pictures before closing it up again... lol..
Instruction booklet and step by step instructions..
Image

Decals..

Image

Image

... and parts....

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Chrome parts!!!.... What the heck do i do with these pieces?? Bleach and a good soaking i take it?

Image

Image

Image

Image

... and one plastic bag of white plastic parts... Didn't open it for fear of losing anything for now... :wtf:

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

So... here it is... still in its box, looking... taunting me....
I'll be seeking help and advise guys.... Not got a clue.... Will look fantastic when finished i'm sure.... if someone else builds and paints it... Haha...
Oh well, Hope everybody else's build are going well...
Until next time, Stay safe, keep well...
Happy Modelling. :thumb1:

Ya, that is a doozy :
Revell are not my favorite kits.....perhaps pass on it and get a Tamiya, anything!!

Hot rod hey, hmmm lots of chrome and big tires
Woody, hmm real wood sides....like basswood or balsa wood stained with varnish maybe.
How about a surf wagon with a board on top of roof
Better paint job...perhaps in the orange or yellow ranges
Tinted windows, dark so it looks gangsta 8-)

Trying to think what I would do here

Rusting scene is a no go as I couldn't pull off the build let alone the rot and rust!..

Thanks for the input Scott, gotta try and bleach off the chrome soon.... Dunno when, just soon!...
Still have no get up and go on this nor the Russia GB....

Hey Waylow, thanks bud, I know Chris through the YouTube and Google+ community, Dirk Pitt too for some Hotrod action.
Gonna have to start and pay more attention to the build as opposed to the finish... Lol..
Thanks again mate, I'll sort out some progress soon... Promise..

Hahaha... Dan already reckons he's coming round! lol.. :D :nena:

But anyways... complete car builder "Noob" questions before i start...
I have obviously seen many many builds of different vehicles, subjects and scenes but confusing tips, tricks and actions are as follows.

1. Do i need to strip ALL chrome parts??
2. Do i leave rubber tyres as they come or prime and repaint tyre grey?? Seems stupid to paint them but is probably impossible to weather or wear if left in the supplied rubber.
3. Can i use nail polish to spray paint? Obviously YES but... what do i thin with, will it ruin my airbrush and what do i clean airbrush with after spraying???
4. Can normal purchased Auto rattle spray cans be used on a car build?
5. If yes to the above is there a different way to apply? ie: Decant and airbrush?? Is decanting necessary?
6. and also can i polish with standard Auto polish or do i just Aqua gloss and leave well alone?

Remembering i don't want to purchase crazy products like Tamiya's special car polish etc... This will probably be the ONLY car build i do so spending cash on one off purchases would be daft..
So just a couple of silly questions from a car noob, but these may also be playing on other "Virgin" car builders minds...
You see so many styles, ways etc..... from budget builds to no expense spared creations. Dr Kranky to Dirk Pitt, Classicplastic101 to Bennymacattack.
All different styles, all superb creations..
Thanks for the input Car building Buddies..... :thumb1:

Re: Wappynutter's Second-hand Speedwa/ oven cleanergon in 1/25 scale...

Post by Twokidsnosleep »

Ok wow, had to go think some on these, but I will give it a shot

1. You can strip what you want. Some parts the chrome looks pretty good and I would keep it. If you do bleach/oven cleaner/brake fluid or whatever strip it, strip it all off to plastic....there is some times an yellowish undercoat that takes a bit to get off

2. For rubber tires I sand the tread to remove moulding seam and paint the lettering white on the sidewall. Have never ain't a tire other than whitewall or letters

3. You could spray nail polish and there is something called nail polish diluent...I had to google that. I would test that out on some styrene before you destroy the body. Nail polish remover is acetone, not sure if I would run that through my airbrush.

4. You can use auto can spray, just get good primer on the plastic as those paints are 'hot' and will eat styrene for breakfast. Test it out first

5. Honestly I rattle can most of my stuff, fast and easy. Tamiya paints are predictable. Maybe it will, change in a new workspace when I will have a spray booth and the airbrush permanently set up....we shall see

6. Yes you can use auto polish on a well cleared and very hard paint. Test a small spot that is inconspicuous.
I clear coat with Future floor acrylic and a large soft brush. It does not take to heavy polish well at least in my hands.

Good primer layers
Paint the body and let it sit a week to cure solid covered somewhere safe....early handling gets finger prints and damage
Clear coat and let that cure a long time as well, especially if you are going to polish it after
Test out your primer, paint and clear first before you ruin a body

Those are my three big things in getting a good car body. I still screw it up

Thanks Scott....... Given me a bit more info to work with on this build.
Googling previous "Speedwagon" builds only brings up one other "professional" Guy's work... spread over many forums and Blogs.. All the same Guy's work though...:
Except one other Guy on page 2 of the Google search... That's this build thread here so no help there.. lol... :wall: :bash:
Will re-evaluate the chrome pieces and try and pick a way to go with it..
Maybe Ammo grey primer then standard car spray cans for the top coat. Possibly an Aqua Gloss to finish or small polish up with standard carwax... Thats all a .....Long way Off yet though..
Thanks again bud.. :thumb1:

.... and so it begins....
Well i cut some bits and glued the chairs together... lol...
Don't nobody hold their breath tho'.. hahaha..

So interior pieces to start the ball rolling..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

... and this is the build step...

Image

2 piece seats to build..

Image

Dash, clocks and steering column..

Image

.. and a couple of pedals.. I take it that its a column change automatic??

Image

Colours are real exciting so i will add something to "Carpet" the floor with.. possibly a bit of blue fabric..

Image

Cut and clean up time..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Seats are glued...

Image

Image

Pedals too!..

Image

Image

Image

So after a quick sand, the seat parts needed very little clean up as the fit was good.. I masked and mounted ready for an Auto paints grey primer..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Then i masked off the pedals and coated just the footwell area with the paint i will be using on the exterior. A nice gloss blue as in the pictures.. Nice and cheap £1 a can too!...

Image

Image

Unmasked the pedals...

Image

Image

Image

... and that's your lot.. Not much i know, but its a start. The interior will be getting a coat of Vallejo Buff colour and then maybe get some detail picked out and a wash. Nothing special as it wont really get seen. I found a blue elasticated knee strap that a small piece may well glue nicely into the interior for the carpet. Just enough pile effect to not look out of scale.
... but thats all for next time... :thumb2:
Hope everyone else's builds are going great?? Most are finished now i see.. :( Always the late starter me!..
Right, til the next time..... Stay safe and well...
Happy Modelling.. :thumb1:

Haha... Thanks Scott... Not spotted anything to scratchbuild yet.. May well add the ignition wires and coil lead but that may well be all there is to add..

I have been picking away a little more today on the interior..

Image

Image

Drilled out the chrome dials...

Image

Gonna add the clock decals to some plasticard then add the chrome dials to the front..

Image

Image

Image

Like that somehow...

Interior paint time...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Carpet making using the masking tape as a mask...

Image

Cut squares out to glue the chairs down..

Image

Attaching to the floorpan with good old double sided tape..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Doesn't look great i know but once the front seats are in and the sides are up it'll look better i'm sure.

So i add the first side...

Image

Image

While drying i took the clocks decal and micro sol'd it to a piece of 0.25mm styrene.

Image

Image

... and glued the chrome dial face in place using TeT..

Image

Image

Quick idea to pick out some details with some steel enamel..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

... and that's enough for now as i am gonna have some family time before i clear off tomorrow for the day with the Bro in Law Dan,
to Cosford " Shropshire model show". A 160 miles round trip at break neck speeds... Hopefully with a fistful of purchased kit boxes... :eeek:
Thanks for taking a look guys....
More soon..

Hey Scott..... Yeah tis true... Shed loads of poor quality pictures were taken with the phone at the model show with Dan...
I have a folder on my desktop containing 288 half okay ones to some how share with you.... Give me a chance to see what i can do, been working hard, long days with very little model time..

I have about finished my "From Russia with Love GB" here...http://intscalemodeller.com/viewtopic.p ... 72#p217672
...... and been picking away at the Speed wagon too!...

Now where was we??

So i got out the aqua gloss and gave everything a brush coat...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Clocks got added...

Image

Image

Then on to the body...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

£1 Car auto primer grey again....

Image

Image

Image

Image

£1 Gloss black for the roof inside, outside too when i get that far...

Image

Image

.... and the chassis got the body colour £1 spray blue gloss..

Image

Image

Brush painted the interior door pillars etc.. what will be visible...

Image

Image

Unmasked where the cockpit will glue in..

Image

... and started to work on various other bits for the underside..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Masked up and painted the blue on the main body..

Image

Image

Image

Image

... and finally i started adding the exhausts and the master cylinder etc... to the chassis..

Image

Image

So stuff is happening, just real slow..... and cheap....... real cheap..... lol.. :shhh: :D
Until the next fumble with the styrene... Take care, stay safe and well Guys.... :thumb1:

Thanks mate, greatly appreciated....
Yes first Auto build ever, not really my thing...... Always think that unless the weathering is spot on and to scale that they always look toy like.
Many of the guys building in this Non ISM build are seasoned PRO'S who know their thing when it comes to replicating the real thing.
Mine....... mine will look like a toy.... hahaha.....
I am just playing it by ear, the only build i could find for any reference is the same build up shared over multiple forums and pages..
So steep learning curve.. lol..
I will keep picking away at it while ever you kind folk keep dropping by for a look and a comment, It may not be the prettiest but it'll be a brutally honest build by a Non skilled Car builder. If i pull off a half decent finish then anybody can... lol..  :wall:
Thanks again for dropping by... All the best..

So........
Not much done to be honest as i seem to be up at 6am for work and not getting home until 12 or so hours later..... and all for a pittance, but hey, its work, its self employed work, and much of my day is spent driving from job to job.. 100+ miles a day mostly...
But saying that, when i do get an hour i pick away at this beauty..
Firstly i did a little masking...

Image

Ended up with this....

Image

Image

Image

Image

Roof is still in primer and well i got some bleed on the edge there so i remasked and went in again to lose it a little better...

Image

Better....

Image

Roof got a coat of auto paint Black gloss..

Image

Image

Image

Gonna build up the engine... Was a little dissapointed as when i started this build i spotted some sea blue wire ignition leads in 1/25 scale for a couple of pounds Sterling... When i finally went to buy, every blooming set across FleaBay UK is gone... typical.... so its not getting any colour coded plug leads.... :wall: :(

Usual Auto primer and Auto paints used with the addition of Vallejo matt white and a Revell sea blue for the distributor cap.

Image

... and thats as far as i have got.... Still picking away, not really sure what i'm doing but having a go and having fun...
Until the next big update... lol..
All the best Guys, continued success with the builds... :thumb1:

Back again.... this isn't really an update, more of an observation as to how fast standard thick bleach will clear off Monogram Chrome parts..
So easy..... So fast...

Okay so i plan to use most of the chrome parts "as is" because well.... well i don't buy fancy paints and cannot put in the time and effort like you seasoned pro Car builders do..
The only other Speed wagon builds across the net have also kept the standard chrome parts where possible, and the guy who's build i admire the most of this kit has done as i am about to do and cleaned off and re painted the brake disks as they should be "Steel" with Gold callipers.

Clean off will be done using Household Morrison's Brand thick bleach ( fresh fragrance).. :D :thumb2:
The ease and speed was amazing....

Firstly the disks..

Image

Image

Removed from the sprue ready to get dunked..

Image

Dunked in a plastic liquid washing soap dispenser...

Image

Products and items together..

Image

In....

Image

Bleach added...

Image

Poked and moved them around for a few seconds...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Looking like half sucked Polo mints.....

Image

Removed from the bleach and rinsed not 1 minute after adding the bleach...

Image

Image

Just like magic.....

Thanks Scott, greatly appreciated buddy.
I may have to post this bleach method in the how to section as my thread is not really a build thead of interest if I'm honest.
It's an older kit that is nothing overly special being built and painted using "poor man's" paints and methods.
All my fault as I refuse to spend money on a subject I don't really enjoy. The build is being done OOB, for you and Kingdan...
Dan donated the kit from his Xmas haul win so I owe him to build it..
Keeps me doing something between GB's..
Thanks again mate.. Continued success.. :th:

Hey Matthew, thanks for dropping by buddy, good to see you.
Erm.... as for the Auto spray cans i have never had a problem so far.. Even the primer coat is an Auto primer.. and a cheap poor quality brand too!...
I'm guessing i just may have struck lucky.....
If not it may be worth a try, but maybe on an old kit or waste styrene products....
Good luck!.. :D
Take care buddy... :thumb1:
:cheers2:

Anyway while i am here i will share a little bit more progress, again using the cheap car auto paints...

So this will be a jumble of parts, paint and putting together of bits and pieces....
I still have no clue what i am doing..... i'm just doing what i feel looks right...
First up i spray the disks and wheels etc...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Finished the tub, gluing in place the dash, steering column and the front seats...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

I also sorted out some paint on the fenders and hood pieces..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Finally some more pieces from around the engine bay....

Image

Image

Started building up the underside too while paint was drying...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

So still loads more to do.... Gloss coats, decals.... more gloss etc... So stay tuned as i fumble my way around this piece of kit...
Hoping to get it finished by the end date.... fingers crossed..
Until the next update, stay safe, keep well Guys...
Happy Modelling.. :thumb1:

Looking slick! I'll have to remember that chrome removal if/when I run into it. That dash and the carpet look awesome!

Cheers Dude, very much appreciated.. Truth be told i don't have a clue what i am doing with this kit..
I'll just keep picking away until its all together and looks like it does on the boxart.
I must say though, there are some very inspirational builds and kits amongst the thread here to help out us non car build enthusiasts...
Right back at the suspension pieces.. Lots of chrome swinging arms and steering rack to glue in place.. lol..
Thanks again buddy.. :thumb1:
:cheers2:

Thanks again Matthew, glad you liking the build buddy..
TV series?? Hmmm... gotta try and think which car you mean now.. This is gonna be a blue/wood/chrome beast... Hopefully!.. : :shifty:
Right gonna go pick at some more of this build.... Got 3 other kits sat here waiting to be started too... Must make some "me" model time... lol

Thanks Scott, greatly appreciate the kind comments buddy..
I just keep picking away aimlessly with no idea what i am doing.. Its like the first ever model i ever built, all casual and full of mistakes.. lol.
So anyway, today i took my badly scratched glass pieces round to Kingdan and let him buff the hell out of them...
No pictures yet as they are wrapped up in tissue awaiting their time to become part of this kit!.. lol. :
But have no fear, i been busy again doing bits so photo's are incoming... Yay!!..

So, we are gonna sort out all that chrome suspension and mount the engine etc....

Image

Image

Image

Image

Now this steering piece was the most confusing as no real mount points are shown.....

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Just wanna say that fitting the steering rack and the exhaust manifolds was a right PITA... CA glue and lots of swearing was needed..

Painted and fitted the fuel tank top..

Image

Front and rear chrome chassis brace bars were fitted also but the chrome finish is damaged in places so i had to hide as best as i could..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Again some chrome damage is visible on a manifold piece and the underside of the front chassis brace..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Gonna do some bodywork stuff.... :  :th:

Image

Image

This kinda stuff.....

Image

Sat the tub on the chassis...

Image

Image

... and now.... time for the dirty old decals....

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

... and we are bang up to date, well apart from Kingdan's polishing skills..... but thats for another update..
Hope everybody's builds are going great and we all still having fun..
So thats it for now... more soon i hope...
Enjoy the Bank holiday weekend Guys..

Haha... Thanks Matthew, greatly appreciate the too kind comments buddy...
I will agree though, i too thought the chassis with the engine in and suspension all finished looked cool.... Shame i didn't get some ignition leads eh?
Oh well, maybe on my next car build.... Never say never.... some of those Escorts and Opal Manta kits look sweet. Or maybe an old Ford Cortina... Yeah that would be cool...
Thanks again mate, hope all is progressing well with your builds..

That's a damn shame... :(
Had one as a young lad so would have been cool to own a kit of one. Looks like i'm just building a Mk2 Escort then if i ever get the chance to purchase at the right price..
Hmmm i wonder if there was ever a Mk1 Escort Estate kit made?? Or even a Morris Marina Estate??... Now there's a car... lol.... :D

Nearly finished Guys..... Bet ya all thought i had given up on this build eh??.. lol..

My paintwork finish is diabolical to be fair.. All bitty and marked, a reason to wet and dry and always airbrush at a low psi..
Aqua gloss was used but applied at too high a psi so it was all bitty. I polished up with a little wax from our Dan, glued in the glass and test fitted the interior for now.
Lots of touch ups and finishing touches required but here ya go.... Progress to date..

Rear lights were made up..

Image

Image

Front grill too...

Image

Chrome radiator cap was added..

Image

Image

Then all the major parts took a couple of coats of Aqua gloss as mentioned above..

Image

Image

Image

Front grill again..

Image

Image

Image

Glass is in.. ( all polished by Dan.. :thumb1: ).. Interior mirror added and the interior tub dry fitted for effect..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

.... and we up to date again..
Paintwork is terrible and i really should flat it back and re gloss it but to be honest i haven't the time for this build.
I will probably get her together before the deadline but that will be about it.
Shame really as i am kinda warming to the old bucket, but... Work gets in the way all the time just lately...
Okay more soon Guys, thanks for taking a look..

Thanks Lysus, greatly appreciate the kind words Sir.. :thumb1:
I stand by my words though.. the paintwork texture is shocking for a car. lol..
I will try to do better next time, cheap rattle can paint and a rushed gloss coat is probably the problem.
Thanks again... Oh yeah, got some more progress to share...

Nothing much just headlight building and radiator and hose placement...

PVA for the lenses..

Image

Wait for these to dry.... which size to use though?? :

Image

The remaining parts off the sprues... All but one part used, a replacement fuel tank by the looks of it..

Image

Image

Radiator and housing in place..

Image

Image

Image

Hoses..... Now these can be a little confusing and there is little reference for placement anywhere on the net.... but i sussed it and took plenty of future reference for anyone searching the same fit problems... :th:

Hey Matthew, thanks for dropping by buddy, sorry it's taken so long to reply... :wall:

Life has gotten in the way of late but I am still picking away at the Speedwagon.
Had to do some adjusting of the glass fitting to accommodate the interior tub and may be nearly ready for a final reveal this week.... Fingers crossed!..

Until then here is a couple of pictures from yesterday's picking away session... lol..

Hopefully i can find an hour or so to glue the body to the lower chassis, add some small bits, finish the decals and BOOM!.. :boom:
