Amodel 1/144 De Havilland D.H.106 Comet 4B

Post by planemaker »

Hi guys! I decided to do a little quick build amongst my other builds.
It's been a long time since I last built an airliner, so it would be fun to do one.
Plus that there are almost no airliner builders here on ISM, why not fill up the gaps a bit.
My airliner build will be the D.H.106 Comet 4B -a british jet airliner from the sixties.

History
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Havilland_Comet
The Comet was the worlds first operational jet airliner and started service in the early fifties as the Comet 1. But due to many crashes caused of structural design flaws, the Comet was nearly withdrawn out of service completely. But in the sixties a new design of the Comet came out,
the Comet 4. It was safer to fly and was larger then the Comet 1. The Comet 4 remained in civil service until the eighties.

I went for the "new tool" Amodel Comet 4B as I thought it would be OK.
I'll be building a Comet 4B as flown by British European Airways (BEA)
The kit was quite bad, with fit issues, sinkmarks, badly moulded panel lines and flash of course.
The decals where good though and the kit even came with finely moulded resin exhaust nozzles.

Bad sink mark.

Here is my current progress on the build:

Front landing gear bay built. Not much detail here to show you.

Fuselage and wings built. Lot's of filling and sanding to come.

That's it for now, more to come. :cheers2:

Yeah, it sure does. Definitly the best looking jet airliner ever produced.
Here are some nice pics I found:

More progress on the Comet:

Fuselage sanded and vertical and horisontal stabelisers attatched.

Image

The surface was so badly moulded that I had to sand it to make it smoother.
Image

Image

I fixed the bad sinkmark using thick CA. It worked great. :)
Image

Image

The fuselage of the model was so flimsy that I had to add some structural support using a piece of sprue.
Image

Fuselage and wings attatched and weight added to the nose.
Image

Seams filled using CA and sanded. I used a marker to check for seams.
Image

Resin exhaust nozzles added. Some filling needed.
Image

The windscreen was probably the worst part of the kit. It didn't fit at all, so lot's of sanding was neeced to get the
bond between it and the fuselage seamless. I even had to use CA as a filler on it.
I'm still working to get it to look good.

More to come. Stay tuned.

Hi there,
the Comet is a great aircraft indeed, but that unfortunately can't be said about the quality of the kits - from any supplier.
I tried building a Comet 4B from Hannants in the April-October timeframe, with very poor results, but then I used only the parts and decals provided by Hannants, I didn't try any 'remedies" such as printing my own. I may do so this year, and go for at least a partial rebuild.
Here is a link to my bog on my rather pathetic attemps at fighting with the Hannants kit, if you're in the mood for a larf:

Hope you find it "funnier" than I did ;-)
