Re: HobbyBoss 1/35 IDF Merkava Mk IIID (LIC)
Wow what an amazing looking kit!
To promises to be an epic build as well, I look forward to seeing progress in due course. Couple of ideas for you, you mentioned using play sand to add texture to the non slip surfaces which I think is a great idea but I do agree most sand might be a bit coarse for it to be successful. Fortunately down here in Weymouth we are blessed with one of, if not best, fine grain beach in the country. I could send you a small sample for trials if you like. Secondly, individual tracks AND pins you are just a glutton for punishment there
. I suggest that you kill two birds with one stone (not literally of course!) and use the brain dead time to spend some 'quality time' with the SO in front of the telly whilst quietly working away at them!

For Anti slip surface
Two easy way out!
Rubber cement or masking Agent of your choice To mask off all the small bolts and other details present on the Turret that you don't want covered in that Grit! Use Micro Brushes for easy application!
Take a picture to remember where you put all that making Agent!
1st: Acrylic way! Use "Gesso" from Liquitex.
2nd: Lacquer way! "Patio furniture" Texturized paint in a Rattle can! It's a little sandy! Not Gritty! Remember to keep in scale!
Only one or two push push! And your have enough grit! Over the whole tank! Not a pebbled beach!
With Gesso! You will have to apply a generous coat by brush, that you stipple and give it a texture ! Using a Stiff brittle brush! The nice thing about Gesso! If you don't like it? You wash it off with Tap water! You must protect the Gesso with either a coat of paint or Future floor wax to enable manipulation after it is dried! If not you risk knocking it off or scratching it!
Another Lacquer alternative would be using Mr. surfacer 500 with a stiff stippling brush!
remember to mask off the nice details you want to keep clean off grit!
Good luck!
I have seen this built and it's Amazing!
I have used Gesso on my M1129 MCV-B Stryker
And used the Patio Texturized paint on my M1A2 Tusk2
They both work!
See ya!

I have heard of people using Game Workshop texture paint for anti-slip coating
Dave.

I've some Vallejo white sand texture paste that I was saving for my T90. I don't know if it will be good enough yet, we'll see later tonight though.. I'm planning an experiment..

Haha... No Norm... I thought that the T90 had non-slip surfaces and I was going to use the sand paste to simulate it if it did.

Actually! The great majority of the turret roof is covered with Neutron absorbing Paddings! Or Mats
It does have a very peculiar texture to it thou! But it's not like sand!
The rest of the Turret and Front Deck is covered in ERA blocks!
something to pounder !!! For my next one!
Not sure where you could use the textured paint on it? Coen...
But I digress
The more Textured paints we find out about! The better
