DML Hunting Tiger Porsche Version

Post by AlkaSeltzer »

Well then here we go!

I am attempting to build DML kit #6351 Premium Jagdtiger Porsche version for the" Heil the Hunters" build.

This is a little bit about the Jagdtiger that I obtained from the internet.
Jagdtiger ("Hunting Tiger") is the common name of a German heavy tank destroyer of World War II. The official German designation was Panzerjäger Tiger Ausf. B as it was based on a lengthened Tiger II chassis. The ordnance inventory designation was Sd. Kfz. 186. The 71-tonne Jagdtiger was the heaviest armored fighting vehicle used operationally during World War II and is the heaviest armored vehicle of any type to achieve series production. The vehicle carried a 128 mm PaK 44 L/55 main gun, capable of out-ranging and defeating any fielded Allied tank. It saw service in small numbers from late 1944 to the end of the war on both the Western and Eastern Front. Tiger ace Otto Carius commanded a company of Jagdtigers. His post-war memoir provides a rare combat history of the Jagdtigers that were under his command. Although 150 were ordered, only between 77 and 88 were produced. Due to an excessive weight, the Jagdtiger was continuously plagued with mechanical problems.

The 653rd Heavy Panzerjäger Battalion (Schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilung 653.) was a tank destroyer unit of the Wehrmacht active during World War II. It was equipped with Ferdinand and later Jagdtiger tank destroyers. Elements of the battalion served on the Eastern, Western, and Italian fronts between 1943 and 1945.
In the Summer of 1945, US Army tested captured Jagdtiger, which was able to penetrate frontal armor plate of M26 General Pershing at 2100 meters. Only few Jagdtigers survived the war and today surviving examples are on the display at Bovington Tank Museum in England, at Museum of Armored Forces in Kubinka (near Moscow) in Russia and at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in USA.

The weight of the vehicle was approximately 70 tons plus or minus a few depending on your source. This made it dangerous to cross bridges with and seeming the only safe way to cross was by rafting it or building a reinforced bridge. If not then bad things could happen.

Attempts were made to camouflage these vehicles.

Panzer Ace Otto Carius said "When the assault guns were calibrated in Sennelager, we experienced our first failure. Despite its 82 tons, our Hunting Tiger didn’t want to act like we wanted it to. Only its armor was satisfactory, its maneuverability left a lot to be desired. In addition, it was an assault gun. There was no traversing turret, just an enclosed armored housing. Any large traversing of the main gun had to be done by moving the entire vehicle. Because of that, transmission and steering differentials soon broke down. That such a monstrosity had to be constructed in the final phase of the war made no sense at all."

The kit itself seems to be a straight forward and very involved with detail. I went through the instructions and was a little taken back by the tracks which are first shown on step 17. They are a 5 piece set up and will test my novice skill level.

All sprues were nicely baged and seem to have no flash nor broken parts.

I got some Zimmerit fenders and body panels for it as well.

So far I have had no major issues with the model. All is working out nicely. I have completed a few wheel, added some zimmerit, and attached some of the running gear. I noticed the photo etch from royal models was very thick compared to the ones that came with the kit. They are going on well though.

Currently I have attached the rear plate and some of the components to it. There are a few areas of the zimmerit that I will have to fix as I found out that the thickness of the photo etch parts make it a little more difficult than what I thought. I believe with practice I may get a little better.

I have made progress on the aftermarket zimmerit fenders and hull.

The kit seems to be going well I am just waiting to deal with the tracks. They look intimidating.

I've built that kit myself some time ago, it's one of my favourites. Superb kit.
Nice aftermarket choices too. Should dress it up quite a bit.

Thanks Coen I am taking my time and I just am getting anxiety over these track and how they will look. This is a much simpler kit compared to a lot of the other Dragon kits. We will push though and do my best. :th:

The body Zimmerit is very thick compared to the photo etch the kit is supplied with. At first I was not a big fan of it being that thick because of the application to the rear was difficult ro me to. But with a little bit of for in it came around to look nice. The fenders are not as thick but the can withstand the stress of a tight fit. The Royal models zimmerit sides fit perfectly. :cheers2:

Currently I have made the following progress! I completed assembly of the interior gun and crew area as well as applied a few coats of paint.
Image

Image

I have added the remaining zimmerit to the hull area.
Image

Image

I did attempt to make the zimmerit for the bow machine gun on my own as I could not locate any zimmerit in the Royal photo etch aftermarket packet. This was my first attempt and I tried to do it with putty but that did not work so well. I then used a screwdriver that was heated. I will sand it and attempt to blend it with the bow area.

Image

So far the kit has been pretty straight forward and the dragon parts fit well. I did not put on all the side skirts as I will try to weather the Jagdtiger and give it a used look. This will be accomplished by using washes and other methods. HOPEFULLY this will work. Having a good time trying!

Nice update! Looks to be a great kit.
About the zim ... I hope you got more luck with it then I had. I had a couple of rather big fit issues but that was on a different kit so hopefully yours will be just fine

There were virtually no fit issues with the Royal zimmerit brand as compared to the Eduardo that I used on a Tiger before. Don't get me wrong both are very good manufactures but Royal is better for a novice modellers like myself.

I have begun to prime the upper hull and am trying some some black primer as well to give the model some depth when I begin to paint it. At this point based on the two schemes included with the instructions I will probably make it dark yellow and use washes to accent it.

I began working with the multi piece tracks and used the wheels on the hull to help shape them. I did not glue them to the wheels yet and am progressing slowly. I hate these tracks because they are a lot to do to get a small amount together. Now that I have gotten that off my chest I will continue with the build. :eeek:
