Nakajima C6N IJN carrier-based reconnaissance aircraft

Post by rwsmith14 »

Initially I was planning to do a different aircraft. A few weeks ago I came across this aircraft and did some research and I found it to be a very interesting aircraft. It's not a very well know aircraft.

I'll be using the 1/48 Hasegawa kit. this build will be OOB with the exception of the Eduard canopy mask which is still on it's way from the U.K.
I'll enjoy building this kit without all the extra AM items and headaches that come along with them.

The Nakajima C6N Saiun (彩雲, "Iridescent Cloud") was a carrier-based reconnaissance aircraft used by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service in World War II. Advanced for its time, it was the fastest carrier-based aircraft put into service by Japan during the war. The Allied reporting name was Myrt.
Although designed for carrier use, by the time it entered service in September 1944, there were few carriers left for it to operate from, so most were used from land bases.
Its speed was exemplified by a famous telegraph sent after a successful mission: "No Grummans can catch us." ("我に追いつくグラマンなし"). The top speed of the Grumman F6F Hellcat was indeed of the same level, so overtaking a Saiun was out of the question.[3][5]
Despite its speed and performance, on 15 August 1945, a C6N1 was the last aircraft to be shot down in World War II. Just five minutes later, the war was over and all Japanese aircraft were grounded

Started the cockpit. Great detail in the cockpit !! which is exceptional because the cockpit is long. no need for AM parts. the sidewalls of the cockpit are excellent detail as well.

Used Tamiya tape to mask the window on the divider wall between the pilot and observer positions.

Finally got some paint on the cockpit. instructions called out 50% Mitsubishi cockpit green & 50% Nakajima cockpit color . I mixed XF-71 & XF-13 50/50. I forgot how nice Tamiya paints spray. it has been a while since I've used them. I used XF20 thinner to thin 2:1

I plan to use an oil wash inside the cockpit to bring out the nicely done detail.

Fuselage and wings are joined. not too bad. the fit was very tight, wing roots look great. some filler needed. some more clean up required. this is where this will sit for now. I have to dedicate more time to my Homeland GB entries. I'll get hot back on this in a few weeks.

thanks guys...

Like I stated above. initially I as going to do another aircraft for this build. A month before the start date, I was doing some research on another subject and came across this aircraft. it is a very interesting plane. As soon as I found out there was one available on 1/48, I knew that is waht I was doing for this build,
so far, so good, typical Hasegawa kit. :thumb2:

Primed with Vallejo surface primer German Red Brown. Decide to use Red Brown primer based on a recommendation From a fellow modeler, Jason Brewer, Great modeler. He primes his "Green" aircraft in brow,n he states it makes the green Show better. I will probably not be able to tell But I tried it.

next up spraying the bottom fuselage with Tamiya IJN grey XF-75 even though the instructions call for Mitsubishi Green, which doesn't make sense to me

Painted the Cowling and front end also completed painting the bottom. working on masking the canopy... which is a pain in the rear end. :bash: . I can only do one section of canopy at a time before becoming frustrated  . I'm using the eduard canopy mask.

did some post fading of the panels today. Getting more comfortable doing it.. Once blended in with the weathering pigments should look great ! Want to do some detail painting with silver around the flaps and some chipping. Not much chipping since these were used late in the war,, Don't think they had the typical Japanese aircraft weathered look. pictures are few of these and the ones I found, aren't very telling, should be finished with it sometime next week,

just added a few drops of white to the original color.

Decals on.. Was impressed by the hasegawa kit decals, they were thick but went on very smoothly unlike the Expensive Aftermarket decals i use on My Homeland GB build

Going to let them dry for a day or two then, hit it with another coat of Aqua Gloss then on to a weathering wash. I apologize for the lousy pics.

Ultimate Dark wash is on.. Landing struts and tires are on. Just have to put the Landing gear bay doors on plus all the accessories and give it a flat coat and put the rest of the canopy on
