SAS North Africa 1942

Post by rodrant »

Hi ,

My entry in this SiG will be to depict this famous picture of the SAS in North Africa in 1942 .

Image

For that I will be using this :

Image

Three Tamiya Kits of their British Special Air Service Jeep in 1/35 , with Eduard PE add-ons for all three , a Figure kit from Dragon (SAS Vehicle crews North Africa) , Also I have a picture and a SAS BAdge ( think it is a replica...) that I will try to use in the diorama that I'm thinking to make !

:cheers2:
Cheers ,
António

Well , first updates ...

First Jeep to be made , but I Decided not to use the Photo Etched ...I will make the three Jeeps OOB ...too much cut on the kits , and for the idea of the diorama that I had I decided to go with the Three kit's OOB .

well this is the first Box , actually all three are identicals ...

Image

will show you some details of the sprues in another one of the Jeeps , as when I was making the first one I get going and forgot to take some pictures...

The instructions are Tamiya Old Type ...you must get going and see if do not forget anything in the way ...even they advice a lot of scratch building ...making the ammo belts from plastic card ...the straps ...maybe i use some of the PE after all

Image

Jeep almost done sorry ...I place some Photos of other one step by step build here ...

Image

Image

Nice kit ...even old the fit is very good , well not without some issues and some difficulties , but for the first I get going very fast !

Already painted ...Tamiya TS 3 Dark Yellow ...on some white primer ..., I will make some weathering on it after and will try to use some modulation for the first time in my builds ...I'm waiting for some set that I bought ...well again promise to show you next Jeep build with a lot more detail ...

For now this one is like this ...

Image

Image

This is the photo from the Tamiya instructions ...the 'Heavy' version with the Browning Heavy MG

Image

Then get some khaki paint on the seats and now I'm doing the wheels paint ...

Image

Image

Strange start on this build ...:

Some more update, my work for some days during last week ...only today I have time to place here some photos and comments on my build ...

So as i mention before the Jeep is very easy to build ...the radiator is glued , but think it is in wrong position , oh well , the instructions aren't that clear and lack of fixation points on this ...so , the first SAS Jeep is already done ...

Toghether with some of the stowage , this will be the first Jeep of the line , it is the 'Light version' for Short Range missions , it will be equiped with twin Vickers in the Bonet of the Jeep , and a single Vicker in the Left side of the JEep , just behind the gunner ...

Image

The Jeep was Painted using Tamiya Spray TS-3 Dark Yellow ...

Some of the Jerrycans , not an easy fit and a lot of them to do ...

Those square boxes are Ammo cartridges magazines storing boxes for the Vickers ...This kit is very nice it brings a lot of stowage so you can play and make different versions , even in the instructions Tamiya advice is and for fun to make an SAS Jeep as if we were using it :-)

Image

Now some PE , will use it to make the base for fixing the barrels that go in the back of the Jeeps ...

Image

Now will start with the figures ...the most hard to paint so I'm strating doing something on them ...

It will be a Dragon Kit , nad the kit depict exactly the scene that I have in mind , and on the photos that I saw very famous of this very special branch of British Army in WWII .

Image

A lot of Plastic to make 7 Figures ...

Image

Image

So figures started , and I was looking to place them in the Already made Jeep just to see how they will look ...

Image

Instruction ...usual stuff in figure instructions , but quite clear and no issues , nice figures for a diorama , I'b beginning to like Dragon figures and all the variety that they offer !

Image

Image

Yes, they doesn't fit at all in tamiya Jeep , Tamiya Figures fit , but the Soldiers have their feet outside the Jepp , so solution for this was .... :wtf: to cut their feets ...sorry figures !

Image

Actually their feet isn't going to be seen , and main main idea is to depict the scene so ...of we go to this strange fit situation ...

Image

So they will look like this ( first Jeep ...)

Image

So after I start to do some experiment in chipping , so I use a piece of sponge and some Olive drab to do this ...

Already some of some stowage in Jeep to see how could be the final solution ...it is quite funny this part of placing all the stuff ...it brings a Bren MG
, a Thomson a MP-40 German Light MG ....nice ! :th:

Image

Image

Image

Image

More stowage ready to place in the Jeep ...the Whell drive will place it only with the figures ...

Image

More Stowage , still o not know if I will make some straps on the Backpacks and canteens ...some masking tape perhaps , or some PE stripes ...

Image

All the figures done and Primed with Tamiya White Primer ...not my favourite , I like a lot more the grey one , but attending of the color used , and already use it in the Jeep so ...

Image

Still some gaps that i should ut some putty on them

Image

Image

Image

Will use Mr.Hobby Liquid putty with a small brush to fill the gaps .

next update , maybe today , as I today will paint the figures and start doing the other two Jeeps ....still already a photo with my idea of the final Diorama ...some stuff to decide yet , and some work on how to cover the Photo on the base ...

Image

Image

Hope you like it so far guys ! Thank you for watching

Thank you tim ...just saw your build , is great ! Well I thought of this diorama , and could be a simple but very nice diorama , my main challenge is not to replicate all the Jeeps the same way and somehow to differentiate each one , and I have some lack of photos on how is the Layout of the three Jeeps , , two seem to be Light Version , and one Heavy Version , but they have so many armor layouts ...well thank you for watching my thread ! More updates maybe today with the figure painting , and starting on the base ...

Today's work ...

Painted figures ...used acrylics and enamel from Tamiya ...but on the box instructions it is mention that some of the crew have white shirts ...think I go to Buff Color XF-57 from Tamiya ....

Image

Image

An idea for the base ...I got this cheap frame , so will use the scriber , cut it and place the photo on the base protected by this ...

Image

then mask it and start putting some Tamiya Light Sand Texture , paint , but after I decided to use some Plaster to make a little elevation , will then let dry this stuff and then will and pigments to try to do some desert terrain ...

Image

All painted and after a wash ...

Image

the first crew is ready ...and the Jeep is fully loaded :th:

Image

Image

Image

Colonel David Stirling ...

Image

now to do some Jeeps during next days ...

Thank you for all the comments guys ,

Now time form some SAS History :

The British SAS (Special Air Service) was founded by Captain David Stirling and is one of the world's elite special forces. The regiment's famous motto is "Who Dares Wins" and the regiment's history dates back to WWII.

David Stirling :
Image

The idea of creating a desert raiding force to weaken Rommel's supply lines and disrupt aircraft operations was conceived by Captain David Stirling (right) while recovering in hospital from a parachute training accident. Stirling had already gained experience of working behind enemy lines in North Africa with Colonel Robert Laycock's 'Layforce' commando brigade. However, following three disastrous operations during which heavy losses were sustained, the group was disbanded in June 1941.

Remaining convinced of the basic concept, Stirling managed to bluff his way to see Major General Neil Ritchie (Deputy Commander-in-chief N.Africa & Middle East). His idea was to raise a new group from the remains of the Layforce organised into smaller units that would parachute down near enemy airfields, plant delayed-action explosives, then walk to rendezvous points to be picked up by L.R.D.G. (Long-Range Desert Group) patrols. The plan was bold and both Ritchie and his Commander in Chief thought it might just work.

In July 1941 Stirling gained permission to form the L Detachment of the non-existent Special Air Service Brigade, a name intended to confuse German intelligence. His ideas proved difficult to put into practice without sustaining large losses of men either killed or captured On one disastrous occasion only two men made it back! Remembering a successful raid on an airfield carried out by the Layforce when closely supported by the L.R.D.G. in Chevrolet trucks mounted with .303 machine guns, Stirling turned his thoughts towards the potential of the jeep for carrying out his deep penetration raids behind enemy lines.Vehicles obtained by the British Army through the Lend-Lease Scheme were obtained and suitably modified for SAS use.

Their first successful raid soon followed on 17th November 1941, when two groups destroyed 61 aircraft at two airfields. Another raid was launched soon after; this time twenty seven were destroyed. By July 1942 the regiment had 15 specially modified jeeps in action in North Africa.

Image

Image

The jeeps were stripped of all non-essential parts including the windscreen, most of the radiator grille bars and even sometimes the front bumper to increase the effective load carrying capacity of the vehicle. Thus the large amount of fuel and water needed for fast long-range raids could be carried avoiding the need for slower support vehicles. A water condensing unit was fitted to the front to reduce loss from the radiator which would otherwise have had to be topped up from the limited drinking water supplies. The jeeps also carried sand mats, metal wheel channels, radio equipment and large quantities of ammunition.

Image

The jeeps were heavily armed with combinations of both Browning and Vickers K machine guns. The ex-aircraft Vickers weapons were generally mounted in pairs and a total of up to five machine guns were carried on some vehicles. The effectiveness of this armament firing a mix of ball, armour-piercing and tracer shells can be judged from one assault on an airfield where 12 aircraft were destroyed in a five minute raid. With all guns blazing a single SAS jeep could deliver an impressive 5000 rounds per minute! The net result was that over 400 aircraft had been destroyed on the ground by November 1942. Stirling was finally captured in 1943 but escaped four times before being sent to Colditz where he spent the rest of the war.

Image

Image

As the front moved from Africa to Italy and then on into Northwest Europe so did the SAS. The scale of each action varied tremendously. In one operation (codenamed Houndsmith), 144 men were parachuted with jeeps and supplies into an area close to Dijon, France. In another four men in two jeeps killed or wounded 60 SS men destroying two staff cars and a truck in the process at the village of Les Ormes, France.

By late 1944 the SAS were operating behind German lines in Europe. Further modifications to the jeeps included the use of armour plate with bullet-proof glass screen at the front and a wire cutter fitted to the front bumper of some vehicles.

The effectiveness of the SAS in Europe during W.W.II can be judged from the fact that they inflicted 7,733 German casualties, 4,784 prisoners were captured and 700 vehicles were either destroyed or captured. 164 railways were cut, seven trains were destroyed and a further thirty-three derailed. The SAS was briefly disbanded at the end of W.W.II but the methods of organisation and operations had set the pattern for future SAS action in the Falklands and Gulf Wars.

now some update on my build , second Jeep on the way ...

Well I left and promise to show you the contents and step by step build of one of the Jeeps ..

They come with a bag with three sprues

Image

Image

Image

Image

The figures ...not the best but after build could be a good option of you do an OOB build , as already other modellers have made here in the forum and in this SiG with very nice result ! The kit is an old but very nice kit to build , you may do an excellent no stress build with this one !

So we start with the chassis

Image

Suspension sprues to be fitted to the front and rear transmission and then placed on the chassis

Image

like mention in the instructions

Image

Image

Next beggining with the body

Image

Image

Image

Chassis on the body

Image

Image

more under chassis to be made

Image

Bonnet and radiator next

Image

This is the tricky part to place , the suspension bumpers , both front and rear

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

done !

Image

now bonnet and instrument panel

Image

Image

Image

SEats , levers and so on

Image

Image

And ready for a white primer and then some TS 3 Dark yellow ...then all stuff is painted , wheels , the stowage is painted ...

and second jeep is done ...

Image

Image

Image

one word on the figures ....painted with Enamel ...do no tuse Oil Washes ...the White Spirit clears enamel paints , even it gives the some worn look :

well on the third Jeep that now is in WIP , only a difference , will be an Heavy version , so Will need a twin Vickers mount in the rear...

Image

must do some 2 cm rod to act as the mount , and no plastic rod here , so decide to improvise and use some plastic from the sprue ...

Image

Cut here :

Image

Place it here , with a small hole made with my Pin vise

Image

will then add the twin Vickers mount !

So that's is all for today , hope you liked , and please be free to add soem comments .

Final update before the reveal ...

The 3rd Jeep with the Browning and the mount ...

Image

Some chipping ...

Image

Image

Used a piece of sponge and some Olive Drab ...

Image

Then after the Jeep ready and all the stowage loaded ...some wah , will use Ultimate Sand wash to give some dusty look to all Jeeps ...

Image

All three after some wash

Image

Then will remove the excess with a brush ...and will place them in the diorama base ....

will see that in the final reveal !

Very nice work Antònio
I guess i missed your thread before
The kit from tamiya looks very similar to the dragon kit i am building
The only major difference i could find is the body of the jeep wich is slide molded in the dragon kit so the sides are already on there
I like the idea of recreating the photo of the 3 jeeps along with Colonel Sterling
It actually crossed my mind but i have only 1 jeep and didn't bother to get more of them
On the bench
GB builds
1/35 Trumpeter M1132 ESV

Personal builds
1/35 Hobby Boss M1070 tractor with M1000 semi trailer and Meng M1A2 TUSK II Abrams
1/35 Takom V2 rocket with the Meillerwagen and SS100 tractor

Hi MArk ,

yes they are very similar , the fit is quite good , old kit but no issues building it
Well I start to have the interest to build one of the Tamiya ones , as I always was very interested for the Desert Battles in WWII , but then I saw the Photo and the Dragon figures and I wondered if I Can make a diorama out of it , so here it is , actually i could use all the PE , I buy the sets , but I give up as even the figures didn't fit , and the Eduard PE even has the pedals for the Jeeps !!! Maybe would worth it more effort , but in the end I liked a lot the result !

than you for watching ! :th:
