"...we eats it whole"

Post by Twokidsnosleep »

Riddles in the Dark. First foray into a fantasy figure based diorama
Hobbit/Lord of the Rings is my daughter's favorite book topic, so this was a logical choice.
Her favorite scene is where Gollum and Bilbo agree to a riddle game and "if Baggins loses, we eats it whole"

So the real reason I am starting this is I want to practice the water before I do it in my Swamp XWing build in the Star Wars sig.
Choosing bases....these figures are small, like 1/72ndish so I thought I wanted my white moulded base, but too big so must go for the smaller cedar one.

The idea, from a Google search

My layout plan

Besides my Tamiya paints, I got this Citadell set to try out

I am all ears to any suggestions, tips or direction from those more experienced with figures and dios!!!

Didn't get as much time on it today on my "day off" as I wanted
Testing the rocks and arrangement
Image
Blue tape on right is lake water, Bilbo on his stand Gollum in the rocks
I primed everything and got the little boat painted
Image
The bottom is green for goblin skin and the inside a tanish flesh color
Image
I made a little rope to tie it off as Smeagol was a riverman and would have tied off his boats

C'est tout pour ce soir....Bon nuit

Got a little farther along in this....not feeling that great this weekend with a flu aches and such
I propped the little base up so it sits in a larger square and gives a nice shadow line
Figures are pretty much done, just some face rearrangements to Bilbo needed

Got some supplies for the water effects as well
Image
Been warned about this particular water effect.....need to put on thick, it runs, shrinks and cracks.
Or course I learned all that AFTER I bought it

Wow, this is six pages deep in my posts, clearly need an update!
New base made and rough painted, rocks temporarily placed and characters arranged

Here is the scene I want to capture, need to make some scattered bones in the middle
Image

Next is playing with the silicone for water...all in preparation for the X wing Dagoba swamp construction
Anyone made bones before :scratch::

So an interesting experiment with hardware store silicone sealers....these two were clear versions by GE
Easy to handle and spread around, very acetic acid stinky so do it well ventilated area.
Both were labelled as clear and after 3 hrs were dry to touch and perfectly able to see though to the base.
Paintability is interesting as my Citadel water base acrylics do not really hold (LHS in pic). Tamiya acrylics (RHS) did better but still not full on coverage. There are paintable clear caulking silicones (GE Silicone II) if you need to surface paint.

Image
There are some great videos on cheap silicone water effects....you don't need to buy expensive ones
Gollum and some rocks are now crazy-glued on and some final accent paint/shading done on the base

Silicone applied and pic right before I put it away to dry.
Goes on pretty clear right away...don't f with it too long as it gets clumpy instead of flowing.
I will leave it most of Sunday now as I do my chores, maybe get a look at it tonight
