Airfix - Mitsubishi A6M2b 'Zero' - 1/72

Post by Madhouse »

This is going to be my very first GB and my first decent build. By decent build I mean painting, weathering, ...
So here we go!

A little read about the aircraft itself:

The Mitsubishi A6M Zero was a long range Naval fighter aircraft that formed the backbone of the Imperial Japanese Navy's Air Arm throughout the Second World War. Blessed with exceptional manoeuvrability, as well as long range, the Zero proved to be the best carrier fighter aircraft in the World when it made its debut in China in 1940, and then again in the opening stages of the Pacific War against the United States. This -21 variant was the first to feature folding wingtips and proved to be the dominant fighter in the opening stages of the Pacific War over Pearl Harbor and the following battles.
This long range and maneuverability however had come at a price and the Zero featured almost no armor protection and was only lightly armed itself. As the air war over the Pacific intensified, the Zero found itself increasingly outclassed by its American adversaries, though in the hands of a skilled pilot, it could still be a deadly opponent.
By 1945, the Zero was still in widespread service and was used in the Kamikaze role in the closing stages of the Pacific War.

Speed: 333mph
Length: 9.06m
Wingspan: 12m
Armament: 2x 7.7mm MG, 2x 20mm cannons

What is in the box? (not that much, only has 47 parts)

Good luck with the build mate, it's a fantastic little kit. I made one about a year ago when i first got into the hobby. :th:

Cockpit assembled. Broke the steering column, by removing an ejected pin and tidying up the part. But nothing serious.

Image

Sprayed the cockpit and sidewalls interior green and they are now ready for details.
First I had my paint to thin. So it ran of the cockpit (luckily the back), but in the end I am pretty happy about it.

This is going to be a long post. I've finished the cockpit and took pictures along the way.

In the previous post you've seen that I build and painted the cockpit in interior green.
Here's a step by step how I finished the cockpit.

First added some little details on the handles and sidewalls. Such as painting the boxes, lights and cables.
Most of it is in acrylic paints but the bright colors are in enemal, because it covers better.

Image
Image
Image

Here is my first attempt ever at dry brushing. I'm pretty happy with it.

Image
Image

A little bit of scratch building. Made a seatbelt out of some maskingtape.
And because of this i'm considering cutting the canopy so you can see inside the cockpit.

Image

I've put a clear over that before I put the decals on.
The only thing that bothers me is that the carrier film is bigger than the dash. How can I solve this?

Image

The next thing was a wash.

Image

I'm pretty happy with the results so far, so looking forward to next steps of the build.

Man, making this post took me longer than building the cockpit. Hope you enjoyed it.
On to the next part of the build.

Glued the fuselage and wings together.
Had to use a bit of putty on the nose because of a stupid accident. Glued the halves together and put some tape on it to secure, but the excess glue seeped under the tape and melted the plastic. So I had to fix it.

A dry fit. This kit fits nicely, hardly no sanding needed.

Are you satisfied with the kit so far?
I would then buy me a Zero as soon as possible. Miss one in my shelf...

Really satisfied so far. For a 6 euro kit it is very nice.
Goes together without any trouble so far.

Fantastic job on the cockpit interior. The attention to detail doing the dials and gauges is incredible. Nice weathering too.

I haven't done much since the last update. Just painted the parts of the fuselage that go under the canopy.

Image

Image

I also decided not to cut the canopy. It is to thick to slide over the rear part. But fortunately the canopy is very clear.

Glued the canopy on and masked it.

It was my first time masking a canopy and this is not an easy canopy.
First tried it with Tamiya masking tape, but went completely wrong. Couldn't find or see the lines.
So I've ruined a few windows.
Now I've masked it with clear tape. Still not perfect but good enough for me.
Found out that masking is not a fun part of building models.

Image
Image

And glued the wings to the fuselage.
Still needs some filling.

Masking that 1/72 Airfix Zero can be a pain. It has incorrect rounded corners which do not help. I found the Eduard masks to be invaluable at this scale. Coming along great. Look forward to the rest of the build.

Prepared the fuselage and some other parts for priming.
It needed a little bit of filling and sanding.

Image

Primed the fuselage. I've noticed some etches of the mask on the canopy came lose, but no big problem so far.

Image

I went for the pre-shade method. Tried it with the airbrush, but it didn't work out. So I brushed it on.
Still need some practice with the airbrush.

Image

Next step the two-tone paint job. Looking forward to that. :wtf:
Just need to figure out how to cut the masking tape in the correct shape.

Awesome work on the cockpit. Great detail and weathering. I'd be stoked if i could produce that level of workmanship.

Bring on the rest of the build. Looking good!

It's been a while since I've done and posted something.

Painted fuselage.
It went not without its problems, but I'm pleased.
Still need a lot of practice with the airbrush.

First did the underside.
Image

Then masked the plane. I did not freehand the waves. I printed the colourscheme of Airfix at the correct size, put my tape under the print and cut it out.
Worked pretty well. I also masked the whole underside but know if I'm going to do that in the future (you'll see in a moment).

Image
Image

The dark green finished. Looks OK.

Image

The waves are good.

Image

But the paint went true the panel lines and under the tape. But a little bit retouching with brush and it was OK.

2 posts in 1 day. I'm on a role. :D

As you can see I've painted the yellow stripes on. I didn't want to fiddle with the decals. Thought this would be simpler :wall:
Boy, was I wrong. Masked it of, started spraying but it didn't work. The green was to dark for the yellow to cover. And I had leaking paint again.
So washed of the yellow, masked it again and sanded it a little. Now sprayed it with primer first, then the yellow, worked great.
So retouched where needed with a brush and put clear over it.
Pretty happy with the result so far.

Next step the engine and cowling.

Nice deep green you got there! I had the same troubles with finding the lines through the masking tape on my Zero(link in my signature). Bad luck with the panel lines there, but I guess that's the downside with Airfix' deep panel lines  Keep up the good work!

It's been a while.
I didn't have a lot of time last month.
Finished the gear and decals this week, but can't finish the build before the deadline tomorrow.
Still have to dry brush, ship and oil wash the model.
Hopefully I have the time to upload the pictures of the last stages of the build so far. But will continue and post the end result on the forum in the next couple weeks.
