Coen Build SIG - Dragon 1/35 Tiger I Late Production

Post by CrazyMajor »

Well I finaley cleared some space on the bench and found the time to put into this.

My entry in to this great SIG is the Dragon 1/35 Pz.Kpfw.VI Ausf.E Tiger I Late Production 3 in 1 kit 6406, with some extras. This will be my first proper attempte with Photo eche and metel tracks.
Image

Image

Well as this is my first AFV, and dragon kit so I am realy looking foward to this build.

Now I do have to confess that I was hoping to get this up 3 day ago before i started the build but that was not to be. so this will also have my first sitting of the build, as well.

Part 1 - The build steps 1-3

Image

After looking at the manual for some time to make sure i understand this. I gathered all the runner I will be needing and got stuck in.

Image

Image

Image

Getting the torsion bars installed I found to be trying. This is just down to my lack of exspiriance of building AFV.

This is where i ended the stitting. I really enjoyed this and found it rather rewarding.

Thanks all, Looking forward to this weekend to do a bit more work onto the Tiger.

This week I have so far done more reading into the Tiger and some thinking regarding adding Zimmerit. I'm not a big fan of Zimmerit, just because of the way it looks. But the more I look into it the more it starts to appeal. I still have some time to think on this.

Can anyone suggest where I can find some Zimmerit after market parts for this beauty?

Here is where you can start looking if that helps. This is the Atak set for your kit.

Thanks for the link Coen, much appreciated.

Well I may of did some more work tonight...

Part 2 - The build steps 4 Plus some repair work

Image

the wheels were nice and simple. A few cuts and a quick sand and they were done

(With take pic tomorrow)

And the back plate was a dream to put it. But then I was looking ahead in the manual and notest something hinky...

Image

it was missing to small plasting bits for the starter plate... well I think its the starter plate. May do some more reading tonight to find out. but ether way I needed to do some miner repair work. just a simple transplant from the other back plate.

Image

A small dab of Tamiya Extra thin and bobs your uncle.

Image

Image

Well I need to get a new 0.5mm drill bit for the track as I may need to wait for some bit to arrive.

Well I may of bought some ATAK Zimmerit today. So the main par of the build is on hold for a week. Which normal is not a good thing for me... But I have a cunning plan. I'm going to make a start with the tracks. So tomorrows will be drilling and assembling tracks.

Well it's the weekend and that mean building time....

Part 3 - The Fruil Track

So this morning I was really looking forward to building some Fruil track. One reason for this is this is something new.

Image

Image

I manage to finish one side while watching Star Wars Ep2.

Image

I do have one question, the instruction inside mention a left side and a right side. Know I have put together about 20 from the other pack but they look the same as the other pack.... I'm I being a noob modeler here or what. Can anyone tell me if this is correct.
Image
.
Image

Just wondering about that. Not really going to chance anything. Just add some story to my build. The rush to battle...

Looking great there Rhys and there's definitely something quite therapeutic in assembling Friul tracks.

You can tell us, how many times did you stab yourself with the drill bit - I'm down to 4 times a track now! :th:

Well today could of been better... and it got better when I walked into the house. I have 3 packages, that revealed

Image

one happy man. so tonight i put the build back on track.

Part 4 - The build steps 5

So the aim for tonight was to finish the back plate on the tiger. So I added the ATAK Zimmerit which was fun. Had to do some cutting but was rather fun.
Image

Image

Then next part was to add the starter cover and exhausts. I have also some photo etch. Which is were I finished for the night.

Thanks Coen.

Well its taken me 4 days to finish the back of the tiger and attached the sides.

Part 4 - The build steps 5, 6 and half of 7

Well I finished step 5 which was just the heat shields.

Image

Image

They were not as bad to bend as I thought. Rather enjoyed it.

Step 6 was not so fun. I'm looking at making the commend version of the Tiger and that make some extra work for me regarding the Zimmerit. but that is par for the course.

But one bit I did miss was some of the holes for peg... but this is my first time with Zimmerit so hay ho.

Before installing any of the other parts for back I made my first really venture into photo etch... wow that is all im going to say. Not 100% happy with the work I did but I am over the moon with what I did. this is going to be my best kit I have made and I don't really care with any small error I have made.

This side was my best side.
Image

Image

This side is meh.
Image

Image

So I added some of the part for the back. I use some photo etch bit and some kit part. The reason for that is when I was making the clamps for the Jack I some how lost one bit.... but I think it adds some back story to the tiger... that is my story.

Image

After all that was done I started to put the side on and that is where I am.
