H&S Ultra question

Post by Azean »

Hi folks,

Is it possible to get a quick fix for this airbrush, I'm new to airbrushing and I'm having trouble getting used to the lever, I have a habit of trying to do fine lines for pre-shading etc and end up pulling to far back and getting paint all over the place lol, I'm sure that with practice this will get better but for the sake of my more models I thought this would help in the meantime...

Thanks guys all advice is gratefully received :)

Hi mate, I think Paul reviewed a fine pressure regulator that fits onto the H&S Ultra and he was very impressed with it. It fits between the airline and the bottom of the airbrush and will allow from about 10-20% of normal air pressure upto the full pressure supplied by your compressor. I think if you drop him a pm he'll be able to tell the name of the thing (I've forgotten) and where he gets his supplies.

Check out air-craft.net or .com
Not sure wich one but it is the same shop Paul goes to
They may have a rear section with a limiter there
That way you can adjust the amount of pull you have on the airbrush

Thanks - had a look on there but could only find ones for the evolution, and I guessing that those wont fit on the ultra?

The Fine pressure control valve is what you may find handy Known as the FPC valve. Martin at www.air-craft.net can help u out drop him a email and he can answer if it'll fit (I'm 99%) sure it will though.

Also ask if the needle limiter from the evo will fit too as this may help you

Aye I saw it earlier ;-)

Though I think some of my problem is not thinning my paint enough, I have been using mostly Vallejo primers and model air paint and both seem to clog my airbrush as the paint will just stop coming out with I pull back for more paint, have just tried thinning the primer as I have far more of that to play about with and the flow seems to be far more consistent

Btw do you know what pressure I should use with these paint, have been using 15, I tried 25 which worked fine on paper but didn't go to well on the model, was spidering all of the the shop lol

Yep - that seems to work nicely along with thinning down the model air paint (which seems odd to me as its supposed to be thinned lol)

Yes but even vallejo has mentioned that thinning can be required
The most important quality of model air is the size of the pigment particals in the paint
These are a lot (with a microscope) smaller then model color paints
This should mean that it is less likely too clog your airbrush

Ok, so now I have my pressure sorted and thinning my paint properly I'm still thinking of upgrading to a new H&S that has a form of paint control on it, I have been looking at the following three airbrushes;

Harder & Steenbeck Infinity CRplus 0.2
Evolution Silverline Solo Airbrush
Martin at air-craft also suggested the Evolution CRplus 0.2 and buy the quick stop seperatly as an alternative to the infinity

But to be honest beyond the price difference and how cool the infinity looks I cant really see much difference between them but I'm still a newb to all this, so what do you guys recommend, is the infinity worth the extra pennies ?

Oh and on a side note, I just wanted to say this forum is awesome, as I'm new this place is a wealth of information and tips and you are all very helpful :D

I know this is an old post and someone may have come up with a better answer but as I was searching for the same myself thought I would update, If you are still looking for this I have found a guy in the US (Switcher, who builds tanks) who managed to work out that the Quick Fix for the Evolution (123663) will work but you need to shorten the needle..
Or if you are or have access to a machinist the inner brass tube on the quick fix can apparently be shortened by 6mm ( I haven't found positive confirmation of that bit yet though) so to be 100% confident I would like to see one and strip it down...

I have been looking at this myself as I use my Ultra for Priming and like to pick up and put down (lots!) and carry on at the same needle setting, having a quick fix makes this a breeze...
