Kelly's Heroes GB: "Business is Business" Entry

This is my entry in Kelly's Heroes GB. I'll be building a dio portraying the last scenes of the movie; American soldiers will be loading gold crates on top of a German truck in front of the Bank. Oddball will be close by with his new adquired Tiger I.

I'm going to start building the German Truck

Kelly's Heroes GB: German Cargo Truck "Business is Business" Update 1

As you can see the tools are included in this truck. However, I won't be using them.

Image

They don't appear in the truck, so I will respect that. There are some other differences but I don't mind. Probably back in 1970 they were using trucks from the Yugoslavian army that they had at hand.

Image

Nevertheless, I'll scratch build a similar canvas frame

Image

I started building the chasis

Image

Image

I sanded the wheels to give them a used look

Image

Obvioulsly, I didn't sand the spare wheel

Image

I attacked the cabin...

Image

Injection pin marks! Again!!

Image

Putty Time

Image

I'll be leaving that hatch in the open position

Image

The cabin is done. I'll glue the roof after painting the interior

Image

Almost there...

Image

A box!!!

Image

Done. Ready for the painting phase

Image

Image

Image

Image

Thanks for watching!! See you on the next update :cheers2:

Kelly's Heroes GB - German Truck - "Business is Business" - Update 2

I used iron wire to scratch-build the canvas frame

Image

Image

I recreated wooden planks with simple plastic

Image

Image

Image

I airbrushed everything with black primer

Image

Then I painted the cabin interior

Image

I also added a dark oil wash

Image

...and locked the cabin

Image

I airbrushed the cargo with brown hues

Image

I sealed the colours with matt varnish and then I sprayed the cargo with hairspray

Image

I airbrushed the whole truck with German grey. There is a slight colour modulation

Image

Then, I chipped the surface with an old brush and water.

Image

I went on painting wheels

Image

...and that's the result

Image

Finally, I painted details

Image

That's it. Now the truck is ready for weathering

Image

Image

Kelly's Heroes GB: "Business is Business" Update 3 & Opel Blitz Reveal

I drew basic positions on a styrophoam base

Image

These sticks are going to be the columns

Image

The dio started getting bigger on its own volition

Image

I cut doors and windows on white cardboard

Image

I used cork for some elements

Image

I started adding white clay on the pillars

Image

White clay shrinks when dry, so I tried to avoid its pull with some home-made counter-weight

Image

These styrophoam blocks helped against the same drying tension

Image

It looks crude but it's just the skeleton of the building

Image

It's going to need filing, further white clay additions and more filing...

Image

So... let's file... It's going to be a long way

Image

Let's finish the German truck: That's how it looks after adding decals and a Chicken Tit® dot filter

Image

I went on with an oil dark wash

Image

Windows got damaged due to my inexperience. Masking tape doesn't protect from turpentine (I learnt it the hard way) Don't panic though... I learnt a trick from Panzerman Bill

Image

Wax polish solves everything! :)

Image

I went on bleaching surfaces with light gray acrylics

Image

I varied wood tones on the exposed surfaces

Image

I had a happy accident: I sprayed matt varnish and it caused a chemical reaction with the wax polish. I removed varnish before it dried on the
wipers area and got a wiping effect for free :)

Image

Image

I enphasized metal edges once more

Image

...and added some rust (this time there's no point in overdoing it)

Image

I added some subtle grime streaks

Image

I also added rust pigments on the exhaust

Image

And finally I added dust which was later carefully scrubbed away with an old brush

Image

License plates corners were "graphited"

Image

...and "grimed"

Image

And finally, I added some oil stains The truck is ready...

Image

Opel Blitz Reveal

Time to work with the bank façade....

LOL  No worries!! There are many things which are not correct in this truck; the one in the movie was not an Opel at all; windshield was divided, the canvas vertical frame was flat and there wasn't a cargo sign on top of the cabin!! But... It looks a littke bit like the one in the movie, and that's enough for me. Otherwise, I would spend too much time with those endeless details and I would neglect the rest of the dio: decisions, decisions, decisions... Life's short! and... time's gold!!! LOL  Cheers mate! :cheers2:

Column details

These two blocks became templates

I dipped them inside plaster

Kelly's Heroes GB "Business is Business" Update 5

A balcony & the seed of destruction

I emptied the styrofoam and added white clay stairs

Image

I started giving shape to these columns

Image

Upper column parts were left aside to dry

Image

I retouched column bases defining shapes

Image

These seams are going to help me with the balcony destruction

Image

I filed the column bases

Image

The dio kept growing...

Image

...They have a will of their own...

Image

Image

I covered the cartboard with white clay

Image

I also cut the railing using white cartboard

Image

I used tiny cocktail sticks

Image

I also modified the ground surface to include the truck "in" the dio

Image

More filing.... :O

Image

I also used cork for additional structures

Image

..and covered everything with white clay

Image

I carried out a final general filing....

Image

Now the rest of the façade is waiting...

Image

Kelly's Heroes GB: "Business is Business" Update 6

I added another structure to the balcony. I used cork

Image

I had never used rubber paper before. So, I gave it a try...

Image

Image

Meticulous work is needed

Image

Image

Image

Additional tiles were added

Image

Ok. Let's work with the balcony...

Image

I used cork to create thicker volumes

Image

I created window arches with rubber paper

Image

Loved this part! I had a lot of fun laying these tiles

Image

Image

I'm adding a thinned layer of white clay

Image

I'm doing the same with the wall stone tiles

Image

I applied a couple of layers. Once it dries it gets a whitish tone

Image

Image

Balcony details were modelled with white clay.

Image

Now, don't froget to call the carpenter...

Image

Image

Get all the modellers together. Watch the building inspector's face when he sees all the stubs are styrene, you keep refer to your "two panzer garage" and you proudly point out "we used real dirt in the yard...".

Kelly's Heroes GB "Business is Business" Update 7

Carpentry

We left it here... Snowed landscape

Image

Liam Gloan and Zampie gave me some clues for this carpentry phase

Image

Instead of veneer I used brochette sticks for these boards.

Image

They were already cut and I just had to worry about keeping an even surface

Image

I used blue tag to correct uneven surfaces and white glue to fix everything

Image

It went on...

Image

...and on...

Image

Image

Done!

Image

I sanded the floor a little bit

Image

It looks better now

Image

As Liam Gloan advised I added a stain coat

Image

That's the result

Looks like a dancing room... I'll have to turn it into a bank office

Image

Ok.. So I weathered it carefully with an abrassive sponge

Image

Looking good....

Image

Image

I started working with the ground floor

Image

That was easier

Image

I repeated the same process...

Image

More oak varnish...

Image

and sanding

Image

Done!

Image

I started working with window frames

Image

Some holes will be filled with more white clay

Image

I used brochette sticks on angular frames and veneer on window arches

Image

Looks fine

Image

More veneer for that door frame

Image

I had a lot of work covering seams with white clay

Image

Edges need polish.. I'll let them dry and work on them later

Image

More filing! :)

Image

You know... Quite time consuming

Image

Done!

Image

I covered imperfections with white clay and painted it with woody colours.

Image

Very important: Cover veneer with a varnish coat before staining it

Image

Otherwise you'll get irregular stains

Image

Base boards.. Almost there!

Image

I used white glue again

Image

Ugly seams and holes were covered with little pieces of veneer

Image

More varnish....

Image

A stain coat and we are ready to go

Your work is magnificent. I cannot wait to see your next posting. I just managed to purchase the Jaguar Models Kelly's Heros figure set. I would like to make something similar, the initial meeting between the Tiger commander and Kelly's gang. Would also like to do Oddball in the Tiger at the end of the movie.
