WH40k Chaos Hellbrute

Post by Raptor »

Hey guys, I have been painting miniatures a while now, trying to perfect my techniques. All current Aircraft and Tank modelling on hold.

I saw this model entered in a competition and although the painter was good I felt he missed out not using an airbrush for the muscle tone and keeping the entire model in red (skin and armour) GW show it on the box like this.... just didn't look right to me. That being said it is an amazingly sculpted model and I wanted it for my collection.

So here is me trying to do my own critique which may be a total failure but I love trying something new.

My airbrush setup isn't great but I will be using the iwata NEO and seeing how well it copes with details this small.

Step 1. This model goes together in several layers so with this in mind I painted the face first before priming and base coating the rest of the model.

Step 2. Masked off the face. Base coat and preshading armour.
I know I bitched about red skin and armour but don't worry I will be changing the skin.

Step 3. Mask off armour and do base coat of the skin.

Really liking these Andy and thank you for the information as you move step by step, quite the transition from assembly to paint and with the consideration they are quite small, compared to many figure painters

Thanks for the nice words there Jay.

Step 4: 1st highlight on the skin, trying to leave some base coat behind.
Had to turn the air brush pressure down from 20psi took a lot of tweaking to try and get thin enough lines and just enough paint for a nice transition.

Suspect a better air brush might make this step easier but the NEO held up (just!)

Great photos of the Helbrute and great to watch the step by step work you're doing. I completed a Helbrute but finished the model all in blues rather than the accepted reds however love your skin tones. Never used an air brush but would love to give it a try. Look forward to seeing more of the pictures charting your progress.

Ok so I have now highlighted the flesh further, removed all masking and started to pick out the details on the model.

Due to their being a lot of them I thought would I start with the pipes/flesh tubes and metal. This is still a work in progress and I will use a pin wash later to make the metal pop, not sure whether or not t use a normal wash prior to this though hmmmm..
