Hey All,

Been a while since I posted a project. Here is a quick highlight of Meng's MK A Whippet that I started as a buddy build with my son earlier in 2016. Just wrapped up the painting and will hopefully be gloss coating this week and decalling.

The fighting compartment comes flat and you need to bend them into place.

Variety of parts that make the fighting compartment. You have to be real careful here, otherwise the parts won't line up. A trick I saw was to do all the parts while the glue is still setting, so it gives you some time to make adjustments. I had to use some Milliput in the end.

So many wheels, but they won't be seen so you don't have to worry so much about the nubs! They were a pain to line up in the sponsons.

The kit came with some thread for the cables which were already fraying. I took some 32 gauge wire and twisted a few together with my Dremel.

First time using the white/black technique. I used Ammo by Mig's Satin White.

Mig's Green Moss applied. After the base Green Moss was down, I made a 50/50 mix of Green Moss and RAF Interior Green and faded the paint work a little more.

Time to mask and paint the markings. I applied Mig's Scratching effects before painting.

I forgot to take a picture of the white. I used Mig's Satin White and Red. The Red went down real nice, nicer than Model Master Acryl.

After pulling the tape very carefully, too much came off. I'm pretty sure this is the effect of the scratching fluid. It was a little much so I re-painted some of the white.

Details painted and ready for gloss coat and decals, all 4 of them! The cables are a little bright for my liking even though I painted them Steel. Hopefully I can tone it down in weathering.

WOOOO!!!!! This is probably the fastest progress I have made on a model ever! Put the decals on last night and I tackled the tracks today. Here are the pics!

I still need to seal in the decals with Aqua Gloss.

68 links per side. 3 nubs per link. Many hours of soaking in some Archer and cleanin' nubs. The links were then primed with the tank and sprayed with Ammo's Dark Tracks.

Both sides assembled. It's easier to keep them in sections of 5 for priming and painting. You do have to be very careful with assembling the links. There are two tiny connector nubs for each link. If you muscle it in, you'll break a nub and you will either have to use a spare or glue it together.

Due to the drive sprocket, the track sits a bit proud and the links won't wrap and snap.

At least I've read about this problem on this kit and knew what I needed to do, trim the pokey bits off the drive sprockets.

I was very careful about the direction of the track on the first side..........nearly put it on backwards on the second side. After getting the tracks wrapped and snapped, it may pull apart somewhere else, unavoidable I think.....and a bit annoying, like whack-a-mole.

After I was reveling about how great she looked now, I realized that I wanted to spray the decals and red/white stripes with a very thinned green base coat to do some fading. Crap, no more reveling.

Cool idea! I had a Italian Greyhound years back a little similar and a little high strung but a sweet dog. He also liked to taunt my friend's dog when he was chained up, had at least 80 pounds on him. My Greyhound would run right up to him almost nose to nose, then run away barking. Good thing that chain was there.

Hey Fellas,

Small update today, the part I've been dreading for a long time (insert Dredd puns here....I know you will) was the wood effect on the wooden track link things.

I tried a couple things with my Ammo wood acrylic set...but I just couldn't make it look believable. So on to the oil paint method.

OMG guys......this was really easy. Do I sound like a teenage girl nowww? I know you just read that with a vocal fry voice.

Anyway, on to the pictures!

I first sprayed the tracks with Warm-sand yellow by Mig. Maybe I was rushing but I couldn't get it to spray right...eh, in the end the job got done.

On to the fun part, the oil paints. I picked up most of these from Michael's with 50% coupon for each, more than one trip of course, and maybe enlisting one of the lads to pay with a paper coupon as I used my phone.

I think I used Burnt Umber primarily, with dots of the other colors to mix it up. This is the technique I used, but in a much smaller scale. I used a flat brush to put it on and make the streaking. http://www.clubhyper.com/reference/woodgrainel_1.htm

I smoothed it out later so there weren't rough stops.

Now it's sit and wait for a couple of weeks while the oil dries. The remaining yellow and bolts will get some metal paint at that time. I'll try to figure out the base in the meantime. I think it's passable for wood, what do you guys think?

I have heard guys knock around the Windsor and Newton name both brushes and paint....is it good stuf and worth itf???
I inherited a bunch of paints from my mom but took only the acrylic ones. She had only cheap oils and cheap brushes so I let those go.

Thanks Scott! They have their place and come in handy. When you thin it out with some thinner you can tell the pigment size. Not as fine as the Abteilung oils, but like I said, they have their place and work for certain applications. There are 3 grade of WN Oils, I get the middle tier, but read that you should just spread the money and get the highest tier as they have the finest pigments. I bought an acrylic tube once, really limits the opportunities that oils provide and not as easy to remove.

I've been using the Princeton Art Series 4050 brushes and they do just fine. I've just recently moved on from the 15 brushes for $10 sets.

I have cheap Chinese oils and the pigment is like rock salt...takes forever to dry as well
May have to consider the Abteilung, but you have done wonders with the W&N

Good Evening all, or good morning.

A quick update, I finished the wood tracks and I'm really pleased with how they've turned out. The oil has been drying for 5 days and they were completely dry to the touch, even the gentle rub.

It took about 1.5 hours to hand paint all the metal parts with a #2 round brush. I used Mig's Gun Metal paint. It was quite enjoyable overall.

I swear I'm not just raising this post from the dead.....well, I kind of am because it's my post. I finished this a while ago and haven't logged into the forum in about 4 years, so maybe I'll be hanging around again. I created a base for my Mk A Whippet. It was a cheap base I got from my local big box hobby store, gouged it up with a Dremel, painted it black and gloss coat sealed it so the water wouldn't seep in and warp the base, which I've had happen.The wood was a stick from outside I broke up. The barbed wire was hand spun by me.

The natural gray grout color.


Black Based for Badger primer.


Painted the wood.


Started with flat brown.



Burnt umber.


Some dry fitting, I also sprayed some flat brown and burnt umber on the model to start the weathering.

So here are the final pictures. Sorry but I don't remember anything about the mud mix I used. Some enamel products, some gravel, dry brushing, washes and AK Puddles.













I actually won a gold medal at my very first model show! At least when we used to have such things.
